M. LeBlanc is proud to present an exhibition of new paintings by Chicago-based artist Jonah Koppel. The exhibition is Koppel’s first with the gallery, inaugurating a body of work several years in development.
Seeking to wrest his practice from the conceit that modern art is an evolution of conceptual systems, Koppel took distance from exhibiting and began studying the painting techniques of ancient Venetians. Working in oil, specifically oil loaded with leaded crystal powder and wax onto burlap, Koppel steadily produced works that deftly play with the mechanics of image making and visual perception. Improvised with great articulation from disparate elements of Koppel's imagination, the works travel through varied aesthetic hinterlands to shape a process of how painting is seen and autonomy is defined in one's practice.
Jonah Koppel (b. 1978 in Chicago) lives and works in Chicago. Past exhibitions of Koppel’s work include ‘Jonah Koppel’ (2013) at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery in New York, ‘Towards a New Impending Idiot Utopia’ (2011) at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery in New York, ‘NeoCon’ (2005) at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise in New York, and 'Time and Ebb' (2004) at Rivington Arms in New York. Koppel received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001.
