Joseph Grigely | My Sick Eye Drawings

$10.00

“It started in a nearly imperceptible way, when I was sitting at my desk on a quiet Saturday morning: I noticed, almost incidentally, a tiny black dot in the corner of my right eye. But slowly, over the next hour, the dot became a blob, and the blob grew and broke apart, and it streamed and swirled and spilled into my eye like it was an estuary. […] Six weeks after I noticed the small blob in the corner of my eye, a long and elaborate surgery restored my sight, During the 23 days when my vision was compromised, I made over a hundred drawings and watercolors. They were originally meant to document what was happening—and were also motivated out of disbelief about what I was seeing—and my inability to describe the experience with words. Afrer the surgery, I made a few more drawings, then stopped. It was all over, I thought. Or maybe it was really just beginning.”
