“This is a book of acknowledgments. Artists cannot do everything themselves. The process of making art and bringing it to the public involves a wide array of people who have skills beyond my own. There are a lot of hands involved – literally and figuratively – bending materials and ideas in a certain way, and giving shape to intentions: assistants, art handlers, designers, curators, gallerists, family, friends, and, ever and always, sign language interpreters.

The art itself also requires support structures of various kinds: templates, brackets, shelves, hangers, straps, crates. Likewise, there are immaterial forms of support in the shape of institutional contracts and legal statutes. Ultimately, it’s not just about making art and art exhibitions, it is also about being an artist in a sustainable way, working alongside people who directly and indirectly contribute to my sense of being.”

Published on the occasion of Joseph Grigely’s exhibition In What Way Wham? (White Noise and Other Works, 1996-2023) at MASS MoCA, 2024.
